Admittedly, after a year of grappling with Asia’s tropical limestone, Hong Kong’s crimps and slabs offered a refreshing change. Beyond the glittering skyline, delectable culinary haunts, and the infamous urban smog, lies a lesser-known gem that beckons to climbers.
Nestled amidst the concrete jungle, spanning both hillsides and neighboring islands, lay a plethora of crags catering to every skill level and style, promising an unforgettable vertical odyssey.
Lion Rock
Looming dominantly over Kowloon, Lion Rock offers multi-pitch routes, demanding a long hike before the ascent. Although time constraints hindered our personal conquest of its legendary lines, past experiences attest to its worthiness.
Reflecting on the past, the emergence of Soho Crags stands as a testament to the untapped potential within Hong Kong’s rugged terrain.
In hindsight, my prior anticipation of a mere 15 routes pales in comparison to the hidden bounty of over 70, concealed amid the verdant embrace of the hills. Scaling the precipitous cliffs, we found ourselves suspended above the towering skyscrapers.
Descending from our vertical triumph, a leisurely amble led us to the vibrant Soho district. Here we indulged in the culinary delights that abound in this bustling locale.
Beacon Hill Crag
Seeking solace from the urban throng, we redirected our course towards the tranquil embrace of Beacon Hill crag. A brief taxi ride away from the bustling subway station, this sanctuary offered a panoramic view of the harbor.
Here, the routes alternated between challenging slabs and tantalizing overhangs, attracting the post-work crowd with its accessible charm and natural allure.

Tung Long Island
Yearning for an escape beyond the city limits, my wife and I, along with a pair of intrepid locals, embarked on a ferry journey to Tung Long Island, home to Hong Kong’s beloved crag.

Opting for a less trodden path, we gravitated towards the Sea Gully Wall, perched high above the ocean.
The crisp, unblemished granite beckoned, offering a sustained and exhilarating challenge. It culminated in the discovery of my personal favorite, the elusive End of the World route. With the wall all to ourselves, we reveled in the uninterrupted communion with nature’s splendor.
