Yes – We made it! To Paphos, Greece! The last stop in our epic Meditteranean road trip.
We have come a long way on this adventure and have finally reached the end of this voyage. At this point, some of you might be feeling like the legendary Christopher Columbus conquering strange lands. What better place to exit this expedition than the city of Paphos?
History of Paphos, Greece
Now, let me surprise you. Situated in the southwestern Republic of Cyprus, the name Paphos was coined from two ancient cities that preceded the modern town as we see it today.
The older ancient city, known as Palaipaphos in Greek, was situated at modern Pírgos (Kouklia). New Paphos, which had replaced Old Paphos in Roman times, was located 10 miles (16 km) further west. New Paphos and Ktima together constitute modern Paphos.
Established by Greek colonists during the Mycenaean period, Old Paphos housed a renowned temple of Aphrodite and was the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite from the sea foam. During Hellenic times, Paphos ranked second only to Salamis in size and influence among the states of Cyprus.
The Cinyrad dynasty governed Paphos until its eventual conquest by Ptolemy I of Egypt in 294 BCE. Following the decline of the Cinyradae, the establishment of New Paphos, and the Roman annexation of Cyprus in 58 BCE, Old Paphos lost its prominence. It was ultimately abandoned after the 4th century CE.
The harbor, a focal point of the city’s activities, underwent enhancements in 1908 and 1959, yet it remains inadequate for accommodating substantial commercial vessels, catering primarily to a bustling local fishing fleet.
Despite economic challenges stemming from the influx of around 5,000 Greek Cypriot refugees following the Turkish occupation in 1974, by the close of the decade, Paphos had emerged as a hub of robust economic growth, boasting an industrial zone and numerous tourist accommodations.
The city’s industrial sector comprises small-scale enterprises that produce apparel, footwear, canned goods, beverages, and vegetable oils. Notable landmarks in the area include Orthodox churches, the Djami Kebir Mosque, Paphos Castle, and the Frankish baths.

Kato Paphos Archaeological Park
Tourists passionate about history will appreciate the wonders of the Paphos Archaeological Park of Kato Pafos (Paphos), a site of great importance in Cyprus. This park has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a popular tourist spot in Paphos.
The Mosaics
The Kato Paphos Archaeological Park boasts some of the Mediterranean’s most remarkable and well-preserved mosaics. It is astonishing that a farmer accidentally unearthed these mosaics while plowing his fields in 1962.
The site also features the remains of five Roman villas, although only a few pillars, low walls, and foundations are left standing. The main attraction, however, is the vibrant Roman mosaics that depict scenes from ancient Greek mythology and daily life.
We thoroughly enjoyed exploring these intricate works of art during our visit. Additionally, the House of Theseus, with its impressive columns and the mosaic of Theseus battling the Minotaur in the south wing, is worth a visit.
The House of the Four Seasons
This residence is situated in the northern direction of the House of Orpheus. Its designation is derived from a mosaic depicting the embodiment of the four seasons, which dates from the early third century AD. Is it conceivable that this mosaic might have inspired the Instagram grid?
Agora and Odeon
Explore the remnants of a quaint Roman theater and the site that once housed the Agora, a bustling Roman marketplace. The theater still boasts some intact rows of seating and remnants of columns. Additionally, the contemporary Paphos lighthouse is situated nearby.
Boat Trip
The pristine waters of the Blue Lagoon offer an ideal setting for a delightful boat excursion from Paphos. The added convenience of hotel pick-ups ensures a stress-free day of leisurely cruising along the Mediterranean.
Immerse yourself in the refreshing Blue Lagoon, snorkeling and kayaking, or even venture into the captivating sea caves. Revel in the tranquility of the boat as you glide past the breathtaking Akamas Peninsula and the charming Latchi harbor, savoring every moment of relaxation.
Paphos Fort
Paphos Fort, also called Paphos Castle, is a prominent landmark that has endured destruction and reconstruction numerous times before ultimately being restored by the Ottomans in 1592. Originally constructed to safeguard the harbor, it is now one of the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Paphos.
Traverse the bridged moat and ascend the fort to witness awe-inspiring vistas spanning the Mediterranean and the harbor vicinity. Although your time within the fort may not exceed 30 minutes, the €2.50 entrance fee is well worth it solely for the panoramic views.
Suppose you happen to visit Paphos in September. In that case, you might have the opportunity to attend the Aphrodite Festival, where an opera is performed against the backdrop and scenery of the fort.
The Place
The Place is the ideal destination for those who appreciate locally crafted arts and crafts. Visitors can browse through a selection of beautifully handcrafted items such as glassware, paintings, woven rugs, and jewelry. These items serve as excellent souvenirs of a holiday in Paphos or as thoughtful gifts to bring back home.
Situated in Paphos Old Town, The Place is a cultural hub with workshops where talented artists work. As a guest, you can observe the artists at work and even try your hands at creating personal artwork. To conclude the visit, the courtyard offers a charming setting to relax and enjoy coffee.
