Welcome to the enchanting Old Town of Kotor, a medieval treasure on the Adriatic coastline of Montenegro. This is a walled town with seaports and a resort located at the south end of Kotor Bay, one of the four bays of the Gulf of Kotor (Boka Kotorska).
Situated approximately 30 miles (50 km) south of Nikšić, you can find the town at the base of the steep Lovćen massif, which reaches a height of 5,738 feet (1,749 meters).
Originally founded by the ancient Romans as Acruvium, Kotor was an autonomous city under Byzantine rule in the 10th century and later became a free city of medieval Serbia from 1186 to 1371.
A significant portion of Kotor’s medieval fortifications still stand today. The town’s walls, stretching approximately 3 miles (4.5 km), vary in thickness from 7 to 50 feet (2 to 15 meters), and reach a maximum height of around 65 feet (20 meters). The main gate dates back to the 16th century, while the south gate, Kotor’s oldest, was partially constructed in the 9th century. Kotor boasts numerous historic structures, the most grand and exquisite being St. Tryphon Cathedral, erected in 1166, housing numerous frescoes and a treasury of jewels.

How To Enjoy Your Kotor Expedition
Hike The Kotor Fortress
The Kotor fortress is prominently positioned as one of the top attractions in Kotor, and rightfully so. It is undeniably one of the finest destinations to explore in Montenegro! Situated 1300+ steps above Kotor’s old town, this ancient stone fortress is seamlessly integrated into the mountainside. From this elevated vantage point, you will be treated to awe-inspiring panoramic views of the Bay of Kotor.
To make the most of your experience, it is advisable to embark on this hike early in the morning. Beginning between 7 AM and 9 AM is ideal, as the sun has yet to ascend over the mountain, providing much-needed shade. The entire hike typically takes around 30 minutes each way. You will find water stands conveniently placed along the route in case you feel thirsty.
Breakfast In The Old Town
Following the hike, you are likely to feel quite hungry and thirsty and in need of a rest. Therefore, I recommend visiting one dining establishment in the Old Town for a leisurely breakfast. You may consider Cukar or Astoria Restaurant for a pleasant morning meal.

Walk Around The Old Town
The old town of Kotor is truly remarkable, and interestingly, it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It exudes an authentic medieval charm and resembles a scene from Game of Thrones. With its numerous narrow streets and hidden alleys, spending several hours exploring this enchanting Kotor hotspot is a must. You may be completely engrossed in its allure and lose track of time.
This is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the historic cobblestone streets, vibrant green shutters, and houses with orange roofs that have stood for centuries! If you only have a day or two in Kotor, spend most of your time in the old town.
Visit An Ancient Church
Kotor boasts a plethora of ancient churches, each with its captivating narrative and fascinating artifacts. As you wander through the old town, you’ll come across these churches scattered about, but two cannot be missed!
The first is Tryphon Cathedral, which has a rich history dating back to 1166. However, due to numerous earthquakes in the region, it has undergone several reconstructions and is no longer in its original state. Nevertheless, it remains the most prominent church in Kotor’s old town and is one of Montenegro’s two Roman Catholic cathedrals.
When you step inside Tryphon Cathedral, take the time to explore. You cannot help but marvel at its interior deco, especially the two pillars at different heights. The legend goes that this height disparity results from the city running out of funds during reconstruction, forcing them to complete one pillar at a different elevation.
St. Luke’s is the second church that has stood proudly in its original form since 1195. This historic church is a true gem and warrants a visit. Venture inside and admire the original artwork adorning its walls, providing a glimpse into the past.
Walk Along The Pier
Given that Kotor is situated along the Bay of Kotor, a charming pier runs parallel to the water’s edge. You can go on a leisurely stroll here in the evening or at sunset to witness the entire bay and nearby mountains illuminated in a gentle, warm glow. Moreover, during the day, the shoreline is bustling with cruise ships, but they will have departed by nightfall.
Visit The Bakery
You can explore the charming town of Kotor and discover its numerous small bakeries offering delicious morning treats. Visit one of these bakeries in the old city to enjoy a freshly baked croissant or pain au chocolate.
You can savor your pastry in a peaceful spot in the old city before the crowds of tourists arrive or enjoy it by the waterfront. Alternatively, on the second day of your trip, you can choose between embarking on a boat tour to see Our Lady of the Rocks and Perast or taking a bus to Tivat.
Admire the Bay of Kotor
The bay of Kotor is encompassed by verdant mountains and towering cliffs adorned with houses boasting vibrant orange rooftops that line the shoreline. Despite its narrow entrance from the ocean, it is spacious enough to accommodate sizable cruise ships. This attribute contributes to the bustling atmosphere of Kotor during the daytime.
Since it is now your second day in Kotor, you must have already witnessed the awe-inspiring beauty of the bay, particularly when viewed from above. One of the most delightful activities to partake in while in Kotor is to embark on a scenic drive around the bay, making stops at various towns along the way.
Discover Perast
It takes just 20 minutes to drive from the Old Town to Perast, a charming village nestled along the turquoise waters of the bay of Kotor. We were fortunate enough to find a free parking spot along the main road, although there is a large paid parking area near the town that is indicated by signs.
Perast is a picturesque village on the water’s edge, offering stunning views. Several cafes and restaurants are nearby, as well as beautiful churches. One of the highlights of visiting Perast is taking a boat ride to the nearby artificial island called Our Lady of the Rocks.
During the boat ride, you will also pass by St. George, a natural island home to a 12th-century church and graveyard. However, please note that St. George is a private island and can only be admired from the boat. Our Lady of the Rocks, on the other hand, is open to visitors.
Our Lady of the Rocks is a significant religious site dedicated to the Virgin Mary and holds great cultural importance. The island itself was formed by locals dropping rocks into the sea over time, eventually leading to the construction of a church on top. Today, this unique island serves as a place of pilgrimage and attracts numerous visitors daily.
