Grand Charmasson with kids: family climbing in the Ardèche gorges

Le Grand Charmasson is a limestone cliff on the Route des Gorges (D290), just past Vallon-Pont-d’Arc in southern Ardèche. It sits inside the Gorges de l’Ardèche nature reserve. The walls are tall, up to about 100 m, but the base is reached in 5 to 10 minutes, and one sector starts at 3c.

The honest family verdict: a good crag for families with kids who already know the basics, if you arrive early for parking and climb before the afternoon sun hits. It is less suited to toddlers, because the approach is steep and rocky.

We have climbed here over the years.

How we judge crags: What makes a crag kid-friendly

Check access before you go

Grand Charmasson lies inside the Réserve naturelle nationale des Gorges de l’Ardèche. The reserve rules apply to everyone at the crag, and wardens patrol and can fine (Yadugaz07). The decree that sets the rules (2018-964) bans camping and bivouacking outside approved sites, bans fires outside set areas and protects wild plants. Dogs are allowed only on a leash on the trails.

Climbing itself is not banned, but the prefect can regulate sports in the reserve. Check for signs at the parking and on the approach, especially in spring when birds nest on cliffs. Pack out all rubbish, including fruit peel.

Getting there with kids

Drive from Vallon-Pont-d’Arc onto the D290 Route des Gorges. The crag is past the Pont d’Arc, near a hairpin bend and a road tunnel. The main parking is a small old quarry with room for 6 or 7 cars. A few more cars fit along the road near the hairpin or before the tunnel (Yadugaz07).

Parking is the main limit. On spring and autumn weekends, plan to arrive early. If it is full, do not park where you block the road. This is a busy tourist road in high season.

From the car, the walk takes 5 to 10 minutes. It is short but fairly steep and rocky. Older kids manage it fine. With a toddler, use a carrier and go slowly.

Which walls work best for families

Grand Charmasson has about 100 routes across several sectors, including La Noiraude, Palet Breton, La Corniche and Une Famille de Barges. Many of the longer routes have a first pitch at a moderate grade and a second pitch around 6c (Yadugaz07).

Une Famille de Barges is the family sector, as the name suggests. theCrag lists 22 routes from 3c to 6b, with the most around 6a. Yadugaz07 also points to a sector roughly in the centre of the cliff that suits children and beginners, which matches this one. Start the kids on the easiest lines here. A 3c on a 20 m wall in a canyon setting feels like a big adventure.

Teens and stronger kids can try the two-pitch routes. Only do this if they can be lowered or can rappel safely, and if you have the rope length to retreat. The full wall is about 100 m, so some lines need a long rope. Check the topo first.

Safety notes for parents

Steep approach. The short path is steep and rocky. Watch small kids on the way up and on the way down, when everyone is tired.

Helmets. Helmets are recommended here. On a 100 m cliff, a dropped stone or a falling quickdraw can do real damage. Keep the kids’ waiting spot well back from the wall.

The road. At the parking, cars pass on a narrow gorge road. Hold hands from the car to the trail.

Sun and heat. The wall faces west and northwest and gets the afternoon sun. In summer it bakes. Climb in the morning shade or late in the day.

Mistral. The local north wind can be strong and cold. Yadugaz07 advises avoiding the crag on mistral days.

Best time to visit

Autumn is the pick, with spring a close second. In summer, the morning shade lasts until about 2 to 3pm, so you can climb early and then head to the river (Yadugaz07). For full summer days with kids, Font Garnide near Salavas is the shadier choice.

Toilets, water and food

There are no toilets or water at the crag. Use the facilities in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc before you drive up. Bring all your water and a picnic. Vallon has supermarkets, bakeries and cafés.

Where to stay

Vallon-Pont-d’Arc is the base. The area has many campsites, holiday rentals and hotels, and it is very busy in July and August. Book ahead for school holidays. Remember that bivouacking inside the reserve is banned, so do not plan to sleep near the crag.

Things to do nearby with kids

The Pont d’Arc, a huge natural rock arch over the river, is a few minutes from the crag. Families swim and picnic on the beaches below it in summer. Canoe and kayak hire is everywhere in Vallon, and short half-day trips suit kids who can swim. The Grotte Chauvet 2 replica of the famous painted cave is also near Vallon. Mountain bikers can ride the Tioure trail.

Is Grand Charmasson good for families?

Yes, for families with kids who already climb a little. The short approach, a dedicated easy sector from 3c and the gorge setting make it one of the best family crags around Vallon. The tiny parking and the afternoon sun are the two things to plan around. With toddlers, the steep path makes it harder work than a flat roadside crag.

Arrive early. Climb in the morning in summer, or in the afternoon in spring and autumn. Start at Une Famille de Barges. Keep dogs on a leash and follow the reserve rules.
