Smith Rock with kids: family climbing in Central Oregon

Smith Rock State Park sits on a bend of the Crooked River near Terrebonne, about 30 minutes north of Bend in Central Oregon. Its volcanic tuff and basalt cliffs are often called the birthplace of American sport climbing. Most routes are hard, but a few walls near the river have easy, well-bolted lines and short approaches.

The honest family verdict: very good for families who plan around the heat and pick the right walls. Rope de Dope Block is one of the best beginner spots in the West. Bring a stick clip, because many first bolts are high.

We have climbed here over the years.

How we judge crags: What makes a crag kid-friendly

Check access before you go

Smith Rock is an Oregon state park. You need a day-use parking permit. Climbing House listed it at $5 a day, with annual permits also available, but that was in 2023, so check the current price at the park. Some areas close each year for nesting raptors, generally from February to early August, with dates that change each year (Mountain Project). Look for signs at the trailheads and on the walls.

The park is very busy in spring and fall. Arrive early for parking, and be patient on the trails and at popular walls.

Getting there with kids

Smith Rock is about 30 minutes from Bend, near the small town of Terrebonne (Climbing House). Follow signs from US 97 to the park.

From the rim parking lot, take the main trail down toward the river. For Rope de Dope Block, turn left on a side trail before you cross the footbridge, then walk a few hundred yards to the block (Mountain Project). Backwoods Mama, who climbed here with her own kids, describes the approach as quick and easy. The walk down is steep in places, so hold small hands and remember the climb back up at the end of a hot day.

Which walls work best for families

Rope de Dope Block is the family favorite. It is a single 40-foot cube with 12 routes from 5.5 to 5.10b, mostly sport and top-rope. Mountain Project describes it as a spot for beginners and groups, with easy top-ropes and leads. Backwoods Mama notes a wide, flat landing area and picnic tables, and shade until mid-afternoon. Adults reach the top for anchors by a short bouldery scramble or a newer via ferrata-style ladder. Keep kids off the top.

Morning Glory Wall has Five Gallon Buckets (5.8), a route with huge pockets all the way up. It gets morning and evening shade, and there is a composting toilet nearby (Backwoods Mama). The wall also has many very hard routes, so it is busy.

The Dihedrals have easier slab climbing on the right side, about 5.5 to 5.8, including Bunny Face (5.8), a good footwork route. The left side is harder.

Climbing House also lists Dancer (5.7) and Hissing Llamas (5.8) as beginner options.

Safety notes for parents

High first bolts. Climbing House warns that many Smith Rock routes have fairly high first bolts. Use a stick clip on every route, and never let a child lead without the first bolt clipped.

Heat. Summer temperatures can top 100°F. Climb early or in the evening, and carry at least two liters of water per person (Backwoods Mama).

Rattlesnakes. Watch where kids put hands and feet, especially in warm months.

The river. The Crooked River runs right below the walls. Keep small children away from the bank.

Top scrambles. The scramble to the anchors at Rope de Dope is an adult job.

Our what to pack for a family crag day list covers helmets and the rest.

Best time to visit

Mid to late spring and early fall are the best seasons (Climbing House). Winter can be fine on sunny days. In summer, plan for early mornings or evenings only, and use the shaded walls.

Toilets, water and food

There are restrooms near the main lot and a composting toilet near Morning Glory Wall. The Bivy campground has drinking fountains, restrooms and showers for campers (Climbing House). Bring water and lunch for the day. Terrebonne has a few small shops, and Redmond and Bend have everything else.

Where to stay

The Bivy is a walk-in campground near the parking, first come first served. Climbing House listed it at $8 a night per person, with showers. Skull Hollow, about 8 miles away, is a cheaper, simpler option. Bend has many hotels and rentals. Check current fees, as these change.

Things to do nearby with kids

The park’s trails are an attraction in their own right. SmithRock.com suggests the 1.8-mile Homestead to North Point loop as an easier walk, with lunch among the boulders by the Lower Gorge. Older kids and teens can try the 3.7-mile Misery Ridge loop, which climbs over the top past the Monkey Face spire and is much harder work. Bend, half an hour away, has parks, rivers and plenty of family activities for a rest day.

Is Smith Rock good for families?

Yes, with good planning. Rope de Dope Block alone is worth the trip: easy routes, a flat base with picnic tables and shade most of the day. Add the Dihedrals and Morning Glory for more. The trade-offs are heat, crowds, high first bolts and raptor closures.

Go in spring or fall. Buy your parking permit. Start at Rope de Dope. Bring a stick clip, helmets and lots of water.
