Our family embarked on an exciting three-day weekend adventure to the enchanting Chefchaouen and Akchour Valley in the heartwarming country of Morocco. Alongside me were my beloved wife Ernita, and our adventure-loving son, Sebastien – with our ever-curious daughter Claire completing our quartet.
As I guide you through the twists and turns of our captivating journey, you’ll not only discover the mesmerizing beauty of Chefchaouen’s blue-washed streets that seem to stretch endlessly into a dream but also the awe-inspiring wonders of the Akchour Valley.
Why Visit the Akchour Valley
Imagine streets bathed in varying shades of azure, each alleyway a canvas displaying a palette of sky and ocean hues. Chefchaouen is a city suspended in a perpetual embrace with the heavens, and as we strolled through its tranquil streets, the sense of peace within the town’s walls was palpable.
The welcoming smiles of local artisans, the fragrant aroma of traditional Moroccan cuisine, and the unique melody of the local language created a vibrant tapestry of cultural immersion.
Nestled within the rugged Rif mountains, our subsequent escapade led us to the Akchour Valley. The journey there was an adventure in itself, with winding paths that led us through landscapes so breathtaking they seemed otherworldly.
Crystal-clear streams cascading into serene pools, lush greenery that whispered secrets of ancient times, and dramatic rock formations that spoke of nature’s untamed spirit.
Join us, and prepare to be captivated by the vibrant culture, the breathtaking landscapes, and the sheer depth of memorable experiences that enriched our family’s story with the wonders of Morocco.

The “4-Hour” Drive
What was supposed to be a simple 4-hour drive turned into a thrilling and unexpected 7-hour adventure. As we approached the daunting T-intersection, a wave of uncertainty washed over me, instilling the kind of trepidation you feel when a story is about to take a sharp turn into the unknown.
My heart sank, fearing that this might signal the premature end of our eagerly anticipated road trip before it even truly began. It felt akin to the suspense and isolation of castaways stranded on Gilligan’s Island, half-expecting the strains of a catchy theme song to play as if to cue our quirky misfortune. But fear not, dear reader, for it turned out that the road less traveled was paved with our good fortune.
With a stroke of luck, reminiscent of finding a hidden map to buried treasure, and some good old-fashioned instincts in navigating the sea of uncertainty, we managed to find our way through the confusion. We triumphantly dubbed ourselves “The Misadventurers,” unabashedly embracing the comedic energy of Gilligan and his motley crew in spirit if not in circumstance.
Laughter continually resonated throughout the car like a beloved sitcom soundtrack. Our banter and teasing grew into an ensemble of joviality, with jokes that surely would have made Gilligan himself chuckle—if not roar with laughter. It was the unforeseen detours, the serendipitous pitstops, and especially the hilarious interactions with my indomitable travel companions that carved this journey into the annals of memory. Because, at the end of the day, what is an adventure without a heaping sprinkling of humor to season the experience?

Logistics and Lodging
In Akchour Valley, the charm and authenticity of Moroccan riads. Stepping through their intricately carved doors, we entered a world of rich cultural heritage. The vibrant mosaic tiles, ornate archways, and lush inner courtyards created an ambiance that was nothing short of magical.
Every corner revealed a new surprise, from captivating plays of light and shadow to the scent of exotic spices. Moroccan riads were like hidden treasures waiting to be discovered, where history and beauty intertwined to create an unforgettable experience.
But we decided to embark on a more modern resort and stayed at El Cortijo Hotel and Spa. It was a fusion of contemporary design and Moroccan influences. The sleek lines and luxurious furnishings seamlessly blended with traditional elements, creating an atmosphere that was both elegant and welcoming.

Things to Do In Akchour Valley
Akchour Valley, located in the heart of the Rif Mountains near Chefchaouen, truly is a hidden gem. It exudes natural beauty and offers a wealth of adventure for those who dare to explore its terrain.
As a climbing enthusiast, I found myself in what was a veritable outdoor paradise. Its vast limestone cliffs present a multitude of routes that cater to climbers at every skill level. These routes ranged from convenient roadside crags to imposing 400-meter-high cliffs.
The sheer variety was astounding, with climbs of varying difficulties at every turn. These paths and rocky ascents called out to every climber, regardless of their expertise or preference in climbing style. The inclusive nature of the valley meant that, even with a shoulder in recovery, limiting my climbs to single-pitch routes with a difficulty of under 5.11, I never felt short of options.

Yet, to say that Akchour Valley is solely a climber’s haven would be an oversight. This beautiful locale opens its arms just as wide to hikers and nature enthusiasts alike. An intricate network of hiking trails wound through the valley, guiding adventurers to secluded waterfalls and crystal-clear mountain pools, the existence of which seemed more like the subject of a fairytale than reality. The verdant foliage added a touch of magic to these hidden oases, offering a serene and almost mystical experience.
Nature’s paintbrush had been busy in Akchour, splashing an array of colors that captivated the senses. I was particularly taken aback by the enchanting blue hues of the water.
But amongst these natural artworks, nothing quite prepared us for the spectacle that is God’s Bridge. A natural arch carved through millennia, it stood as a testament to the power and artistry of the elements.
Each day that I spent in Akchour Valley had moments of admiration and humble awe. The beauty was endless, the adventures were unlimited, and the memories created were indelible. With the promise of new discoveries and climbs, every future visit shimmers like a gem waiting to be unearthed in the treasure land that is Akchour Valley, the jewel of Chefchaouen.
God’s Bridge – A Marvel of Nature
This remarkable and awe-inspiring geological formation has been meticulously sculpted over innumerable centuries by the relentless forces of erosion. The sheer power of these natural processes leaves us deeply humbled, evoking a reverence for Mother Nature.
As we carefully ventured across the expanse of the bridge, our hearts swelled with an indescribable sense of wonder. We found ourselves gazing upon the spectacular vistas that gracefully unfolded all around us.

The unspoiled beauty of the landscape appeared to hold time in its grasp. Truly, walking across God’s Bridge was more than a mere crossing. It was a transcendental experience. With each measured step upon the ancient stones, an overwhelming gratitude emerged from within.
Moreover, the boundless wonders that await those who possess the courage to explore are laid bare in such moments. The pathways that lead across God’s Bridge serve as a reminder of the infinite beauty nature.
A Dream in Akchour Valley
Our excursion to Akchour Valley proved to be a voyage brimming with laughter, spontaneity, and joy.
Each twist in the road brought us closer as companions. The architectural allure of traditional Moroccan riads provided a night’s refuge that enchanted our very souls. Beyond the rustic walls, we indulged in the unparalleled opulence of El Cortijo Hotel and Spa. It was a stark contrast to the raw beauty we explored by day.
But it wasn’t just the sights and sounds of Akchour that made our journey remarkable. It was the culinary odyssey, in the form of Chinese cuisine that seemed to dance across our palates.
The rugged limestone cliffs dared us to scale new heights. The secretive murmur of hidden waterfalls beckoned us into serene enclaves where time stood still. Above all, the majesty of God’s Bridge spanned across the landscape, a testimony to nature’s grandeur.
