Embracing Expat Life: Exploring Mongolia with Family and Dogs

Strap in because we’re Moving to Mongolia with Family and Dogs—a move that will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Leaving behind the comforts of familiar surroundings, we packed our lives into suitcases and took a flight to this beautiful East Asian country, ready to call it home for the next two years.

If you’ve never come across Mongolia before, it’s a landlocked gem bordered by the vastness of China and the cold expanse of Russia.

There’s something utterly captivating about Mongolia. Did you know that, roughly translated from Latin, Mongolia means ‘Land of the Mountains’? This language resonates like a symphony for anyone who shares my love for rugged terrains and towering peaks. Here are some highlights of our time exploring Mongolia with family.

Discovering Terelj National Park

Our first exploration was the famed Terelj National Park. If you haven’t visited yet, well, you’re missing out!

Terelj has something for everyone. It has tourist spots with charming restaurants and shops, yet it’s expansive enough to house diverse wildlife, a lazily meandering river, natural hot springs, and even a Buddhist monastery.

Located just an hour and a half from Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, Terelj offers a quick escape to tranquility—a place refreshingly uncrowded and welcoming. Imagine vast expanses of granite rising majestically, complemented by lush green surroundings that stretch as far as the eye can see.

This park has it all, whether you seek outdoor adventures or cultural immersion through activities like witnessing traditional sheep herding.

But of course, we are climbers at heart. Not long after our arrival, we were off to climb these mountains. Stay tuned for the thrilling parts!

Settling into Expat Life in Mongolia

Moving to a new country is an adventure in itself, filled with both challenges and delights. While Ernita, the dogs, and I were eager to explore and climb, the practicalities of life insisted on our attention.

We navigated setting up bank accounts, finalizing visas, and settling into our new home, all while getting acquainted with my colleagues at the international school where I’d begun teaching.

Anyone living or working in an international setting will experience this unique lifestyle. To those considering it, I say go for it—you’ll experience a world like never before—more on that in another post.

Experiencing Mongolian Culture

Our immersion into local culture was unforgettable. We attended the Naadam Festival, a vibrant celebration of the “Three Manly Games”—wrestling, archery, and horse racing—central to Mongolia’s cultural heritage. The participants’ energy and passion were infectious.

This immersion extended beyond festivals. Trekking through the daunting expanses of the Gobi Desert was both exhilarating and humbling.

Under a sprawling starry sky, we camped and experienced the overwhelming tranquility of the desert. Locals opened their lives to us, sharing stories and insights into their nomadic lifestyle—a humbling lesson in simplicity and contentment.

The Beauty of Terelj in All Seasons

Summer in Terelj is vibrant, with valleys rich in greenery and flowers. But experiencing it in winter was like stepping into a tranquil, snow-blanketed paradise. Terelj was one of the highlights of our time exploring Mongolia with family.

The park transforms under layers of snow, inviting different exploration. Whether by hiking or peaceful walks, Terelj offers a mystical beauty in stark contrast to the bustling capital.

Our canine companions were particularly intrigued by our encounter with a nomadic family in the park, a heartwarming and eye-opening moment. Their warm hospitality extended to Ernita, the dogs, and me, sparking joy and mutual understanding despite the language barrier.

Our Climbing Adventures and Finding Community

Though our first two days in Terelj were too short to climb extensively, they were incredibly rewarding. Ernita and I pursued renowned routes developed by Black Diamond’s visiting climbers.

With Nathan Smith’s Guidebook in hand, we ventured to test the legendary bolts and slabs in this wild terrain.

Fellow climbers, if you want recommendations or advice for climbing spots in Terelj or around Mongolia, leave your questions in the comments below.

Our time in Mongolia is more than just the climbs—it’s about community, too. From our welcoming new friends at the international school to locals who embraced us as their own, this experience is as much about personal growth as physical adventure.

Closing Thoughts and Call to Adventure

Living outside your comfort zone offers a rare opportunity to redefine yourself. Exploring Mongolia with family is an opportunity to do just that. Its captivating landscape and rich culture present new experiences and challenges, pushing us in ways we hadn’t imagined.
