Climbing at Sand Rock is always a blast, with routes for all levels: sport, top-rope, trad, and boulders for kids. The Holiday Block has easier climbs like Oyster (5.10), and the main area has over 200 routes from 5.5 to 5.12. We usually stick to 5.5–5.9 climbs, taking turns belaying while the rest cheer from the shade.
A few things to remember:
- Avoid climbing on wet sandstone, it’s risky.
- Always check anchors and wear a helmet.

The campsites are literally a stone’s throw from the cliffs, which we love. If camping’s not your bag, Leesburg’s got some comfy motels & pet-friendly cabins. We once stayed in one with a patio grill, & our dog slept happily beside us.
For grub, we usually pack a lunch & grab dinner in town, or fire up the BBQ by the campfire while the kids colour in & the pup naps nearby.
When to Visit & What to Expect
March to May & September to October are our fave times to visit – the weather’s mild & the climbing’s not too tough.
Summer’s a scorcher, so we try to get up early & then crash in the shade during the hottest part of the day. Winter can get a bit chilly, so just throw on a few extra layers.
