The Thrills and Joys of Being a Climbing Family

If you want to go rock climbing with kids as a climbing family, this one is for you.

As a dedicated climber myself, my life always revolved around the next climb or climbing trip, the thrill of new climbing areas, and the joy of exploration. Solitude was my constant companion, and minimalism my philosophy; true friendships were few, possessions even fewer.

The world was my playground, and international travel was as familiar as a walk in the park. I didn’t take vacations—I took climbing trips. Every mountain peak, every crag, and every boulder seemed to call my name, whispering promises of adventure and challenge. The sense of freedom and connection with nature that climbing offered was unmatched.

When I met Ernita, I found the perfect partner in adventure. When we met, she wasn’t a climber, but once introduced to the sport, she quickly caught the bug and became eager to explore every new destination. She became a climber, too, understanding my passion and sharing in my journeys.

We weren’t just life partners; we became climbing companions, exploring the world one climbing area at a time. Over a meal with some coworkers, Ernita once explained, “Eman has to climb like a fish has to swim.” It was the perfect analogy, capturing the essence of my deep-seated need for climbing.

As we settled into our shared life, subtle hints about the future began to surface. Friends and family suggested that starting a family would mean bidding farewell to our adventurous lifestyle, warning that parental duties would replace our days of extended travel and off-the-beaten-path exploration. These conversations often left us contemplating the balance between our love for climbing and the prospect of raising a family.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried. Was I ready to trade my climbing gear for baby bottles? Was I prepared to swap my thrill-filled life for the responsibilities of fatherhood? These questions lingered in my mind as we discussed our future.

Then, fatherhood arrived, and with it came a whole new world of experiences. I realized that being a father didn’t mean giving up my passion for climbing; instead, it meant sharing this passion with my children. Watching their eyes light up with curiosity and excitement as they encountered the natural world for the first time was an indescribable joy.

I began to see climbing through their eyes, rediscovering the magic and wonder that first drew me to the sport. With Ernita by my side, our family embraced the outdoors, creating new memories and traditions that intertwined our love for climbing with the joys of parenthood. The cliffs still called, and now we answered as a family, forging a new path together.

Starting Our Climbing Family

The transition was challenging. Our once flexible schedules now revolved around nap times and feeding routines. Our priorities shifted, and our lifestyle underwent a significant transformation. We had to learn to manage our time differently, balancing work, household chores, and the constant attention our little ones required. But we stayed resilient, and in this process, we discovered a new rhythm that included our children in our adventures.

I vividly remember our first climb after becoming parents. We had prepared meticulously, packing extra gear to ensure our baby’s comfort and safety. The weight of responsibility was palpable, but as I reached those soaring heights and took in the breathtaking views, I forged a profound connection with my newborn—a bond that only nature could create.

This climb was not just about me but about us, our family, and the new chapters we were writing together. Each step we took symbolized a new beginning, a shared journey filled with hope, love, and endless possibilities for the future.

A New Family Tradition

Our children quickly became a part of the climbing community, surrounded by individuals who shared our passion for scaling heights and exploring nature. They learned the nuances of climbing culture swiftly, from understanding the importance of safety protocols to appreciating the unique camaraderie that comes with this adventurous sport.

Sometimes, they climbed alongside us, testing their limits on the rock faces, while other times, they chose to dig in the sand, build elaborate stone castles, or play hide and seek with newfound friends.

While I would love for them to become climbers, I won’t force it upon them. I am proud of their natural affinity for the outdoors, eagerness to learn foreign languages, and appreciation for diverse cultures.

Climbing areas are a salad bowl of cultures united by a common interest—no politics, no religion—just acceptance of one another and mutual respect that transcends boundaries.

One of the most touching moments for us as parents was when my child took their first tentative steps on a mountain trail, echoing their parents’ love for adventure and the outdoors. This moment shaped a new family tradition and strengthened our bond.

Every step they took was a testament to the shared passion for nature we instilled in them and a promise of the countless adventures yet to come. Each trail we traverse together now is a living story of our family’s journey, filled with laughter, challenges, and the simple joy of being in nature.

Overcoming Challenges Together

Surprisingly, fatherhood didn’t restrict my climbing journey; it enhanced it. Seeing the world through my children’s eyes added a new dimension to our adventures. Each climb was now a family endeavor, every journey filled with precious memories and shared experiences. The laughter, the curiosity, and the occasional tears turned each expedition into a cherished story.

We faced a challenging climb that truly tested my resolve and physical limits. The unwavering support of Ernita and our child made all the difference. Their encouraging words and relentless belief in me provided the strength I needed to push through the most challenging moments.

As we conquered the summit together, it underscored the true strength of family in overcoming challenges. It wasn’t just about reaching the top; it was about the bond we strengthened, proving that we can achieve anything together.

Campfire Stories and Shared Laughter

Camping trips became magical experiences. The night sky, filled with countless stars and campfire stories that sparked our imaginations and shared laughter, brought us closer, making us realize that home is wherever we’re together.

One particular trip stands out—the joy of introducing my child to their first climbing experience was unforgettable. We spent hours teaching them the basics, from tying knots to finding suitable footholds.

Witnessing their courage and determination as they reached the top, I realized the legacy of passion and adventure we were passing on. It was a moment of immense pride and a memory that will forever be etched in our hearts.

Redefining Summits

Fatherhood taught me that life isn’t just about reaching the summit and sharing the journey with those you love. It’s about nurturing your children’s love for nature, instilling a sense of adventure, and watching them grow into strong, resilient beings.

Summits take on new meanings as a parent—our child’s first step, their first word, learning to use the potty, and for my son, “peeing like a big boy.”

Looking back, I realize that parenthood didn’t confine me; it expanded my horizons. It made me a better climber, an explorer, and a human being. The most rewarding climbs aren’t always the hardest but the ones shared with family.

These days, they’re followed by good food instead of instant noodles, trips to the park where the kids can meet and play with other children, and, if lucky, time with another family of climbers to share stories with.

As I sit here reflecting on my journey, I’m filled with a profound sense of gratitude. The path from being a solitary climber to becoming a climbing dad has been filled with adventure, challenges, and profound joy. Each climb and step has been a part of this incredible journey that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced so many adventures.

Above all, the opportunity to share my passion for climbing and travel with my family, to see them embrace and love this lifestyle as I do, fills me with a gratitude that’s hard to put into words.
